I'm not uploading all the old Mike Love Show mixtapes, only a couple. Why? BECAUSE I GAVE Y'ALL NIGERIAN GANGSTER & BOTH OF THE UNIVERSAL SESSIONS FOR FREE and Its time I make some cheese off my former hard work (Seriously, there will be paypal links for your favorite mixtapes soon so get ya 10's ready).

So, what's the history behind this mixtape? I wanted NBA Live to be a mixtape series hosted by Chicago area NBA Ballers but the only ones I could pull off were Antoine Walker & Bobby Simmons. (big up to Bob who's still in the league 8 years later, Toine, not so much) We never did Bobby's mixtape because "the streets" hated the Antoine Walker concept. We recorded Bob's part when he was playing for the Wizards & It was the Michael Jordan/Wizards era. Bob talked about Mike being a black hole with the rock, etc. Good stuff, maybe I'll find the dat one day & release it as an interview.

Actually, the real reason I'm releasing this is because True Enuff asked me to. The Dunn Ruff family is repping hard on this one. Hell, it was mastered by Mike Dunn. Wow, I got a mixtape mastered by Mike Dunn. Oh, the things I've accomplished in life...

Anywheezie, the intro of this mixtape was spotlighted as one of my all-time favorite mixtape intros here, so now you get to hear the entire thing & see what I was on in 2002. Creative & cold as hell, still.

I decided to do an edit of the song because I loved that bootleg house version that came out a few years ago, but Its not a version I could ever get away with playing. I wanted to make something more programmable for me.

I produce beats & do remixes. I've also done some award winning Mixtapes that have been spotlighted on MTV and on blogs globally. Some people know that and some people don't. The thing is, if people DON'T know these things, but I want them TO know it, I havent done a good job getting the message across.

Being a mix DJ is what got my foot in the door with radio and I'm always looking to show my skills, in the club or bangin out trax on my laptop. That said, here's a 5 cut sampler of my favorite producton/remixes that I've done in the last year plus. Its a mix of the music that influences me from Hip Hop to Go-Go to Afrobeat to Chicago House music. It's called "The Cold As Hell EP" because of the infamous soundbyte I've been using on Mixtapes since 2004 that says "Shit, Mike Love Cold As Hell." Its been my calling card since my girl Crystal did the drop back in the day.

Big up to my Milwaukee family who will always know me as a DJ 1st & big up to Chicago, the city that helped make me become a global brand and will watch me take my DJ career to new levels.

My archive game is so stellar.

Seriously, I'm not one to wax nostalgic often but when I do look back at the Bad Boy Radio days, I realize today's on-air DJs could never have the "freedom" that we had in our heyday. The cultural impact of Bad Boy Radio is still felt on Chicago radio today so I wanted to compile a lesser known but important segement of the show, the live in-studio freestyle sessions. By the millenium it was rare that a rapper could kick a verse without cursing so our interviews with rappers stayed just that, interviews. But in the early days every MC that stepped foot in the studio had to kick a verse. That said, there are some real gems here, from the classic All About The Bad Boyz (arranged by me) to Common's freestyle over the Invocation beat (from One Day It'll All Make Sense), to the late Big Pun exchanging verses with Fat Joe, to Twista jappin over Aaliyah's One In A Million instrumental, to the entire Flipmode squad rhyming for 10+ minutes over a Master P track, to Juice's crazy & completely off the dome freestyle, to DTP's Shawnna noticibly stepping her rhymes up when former Infamous Syndicate partner Teefa steps in the studio, to KanYe West & Lupe Fiasco bringing the era to a close. Radio history was made.

The Night 2Pac Died-V100 Friday Night Flava 9/13/96

The most important radio show I've ever done. The most memorable. The most controversial. Like the Hot 102 shows, I thought I'd never find the tapes but you never know what you'll come across rummaging thru the garage.

You could say at the time I didn't understand the largeness of the situation. Other than Eazy-Z, no major hip hop artist had died up to that point. Everybody on the paintings with Pac (Big, Aaliyah, Left Eye, Jam Master Jay) died after that fateful Friday night so there was no precedent. I remember thinking, "all this for Pac?" We had already done a top 10 2Pac songs in hour 2 and people wanted more. Today you would have an entire show of music dedicated to an artists memory, but then? You were either for Pac or for B.I.G. and I was definitely riding with B.I.G. in the whole east vs. west thing. Not saying you wanted a man to die, but live by the sword, die by the sword was my attitude. 2Pac just brought out that kind of emotion in you. You either rode with him 100% or were against him 100%.

There is no revisionist history on this show like you would hear in dedication shows today. Its all raw emotions on how we and the listeners felt at that time

After the show V-100 was deluged with calls and complaints from angry listeners the entire weekend. And hearing the show and hindsight being 20/20 I can totally understand why I had to make an apology the following Friday night for some of the remarks I made on the show (even after I say at the end of the show how I'm not apologizing for the things I said). We pissed off people that night and even received a death threat or two, so by the end of the show I was defiant & didn't give a fuck. I even said some things on-air that made my co-host KeKe quit the show afterwards.

Like Aaliyah after him, I didn't know how big Pac was till after he died. On Friday The 13th 1996 I learned.

This show is dedicated to my Flava Crew. Scott "Scotty G" Gunderson in DC, Kenyatta "KeKe" Taylor in NY, and The Midwest Mixer Dr. B in Milwaukee. We made Milwaukee radio history. We were a mixshow that was on once a week for 4 hours and we made more buzz than an entire on-air staff. And we gave them a show to talk about for years to come and for that and I thank you all.

This is the entire 4 hour show.

Hour I

From the top, what still impresses me to this day is how well produced the show is. From the Strick promo that starts the show, to voice messages about Pac's death, to the show intro, to soundbytes from the movie Juice, everything is on point. Shows don't get much tighter than this and I'll take the credit for that. A lot of prep went into this in a short amout of time

Hour II

We kick off the 2Pac top 10 & get Scotty G's and KeKe's thoughts on Pac's life & death. They keep it real & pull no punches. Their words are a testament to how people were really split down the middle on the whole Pac/BIG beef & how the world was where you could speak your mind before everything became ultra politically correct.

Hour III

We finish the 2Pac top 10 & get Doc B's opinion on 2Pac and his legacy plus play a few more promos, songs & Pac cuts.

Hour IV

By now the weight of the callers is starting to get to me & the crew and I'm getting a lil pissed, but we keep it movin & we finish the show off with a few more Pac songs and a mini Booty mix by Dr. B who had been on the wheels the entire show

I found a tape in the garage that geeked me up to new levels of geektivity. I had been looking for my old mixes from Hot 102 for awhile but wasnt having any luck. Seems I was using the tapes for airchecks when I got the job on 'GCI and may have recorded over all the mixshows.

My afternoon with Richard Pegue (In memory of A Legend 1944-2009)

I was actually a bit intimidated by Richard Pegue Initially. Back in the days before Bad Boy Radio when we were only on Saturday nights, Richard used to do his show The Best Music of Your Life in the adjacent Dusty Radio 1390 studios. He never said much more than a "hi" as I passed him in the hall and I figured him to be a bit crotchety. I was like, who is this "Richard PEE-GUE" guy? Growing up in Milwaukee, I didnt know much about Richard Pegue, much less how to pronounce his name or the legendary WVON Good Guys. I did remember our local line-up of radio DJs in the 70's also called themselves the "WAWA Good Guys" but I would soon find out it was Chicago where the name originated.

So here we are in '95-'96 doing the All Request Party on 'GCI while Richard Pegue during the same time slot is playing Dusties on 1390, when we meet Richard's intern/assistant/gopher a 15 year old wunderkid named Lawrence Jones aka LJ. LJ would come into the studio and kick it with us and share an unbelievable wealth of knowledge for old school music for a kid so young. I remember thinking at first he was Richard's son bacause he knew so much about dusties and not only Chicago but Chicago radio history.

The Moo & Oink Jingle? That was Richard Pegue, LJ would say.
The Funtown Jingle? That was Richard too!

I think I learned more about Richard Pegue's place in Chicago radio history talking to LJ than I would have from the man himself.

So there it is, I'm working directly across from a legend every Saturday night and I am now officially intimidated. He's probably thinking, look at these "young bucks" over there with their hip hop and whatnot, they aint got nothin on us with this real music. The best music of our lives...

I could'nt have been more wrong about the man.

Fast Forward to 2003. Dusty Radio has long since been replaced by Gospel Radio 1390 and we're no longer on Saturday nights. Bad Boy Radio is making Chicago radio history in its own right and I recently start doing a mixtape series called The Mike Love Show to display my DJ talents and make a lil noise in the midwest Mixtape game. I'm doing a my 1st mixtape hosted by a Chicago artist, Twista, and I want an intro that truly says Chicago.

And nothing says Chicago like Tommy and the Moo & Oink commercials.

By 2003 Moo & Oink had stopped using their standard jingle and moved to a newer version that wasnt as good. I remember LJ telling me that Richard Pegue would have all the original jingle music and if I wanted to have them cut a mixtape intro as if it was a moo & oink commercial to give him a call. I call Richard and I'll never forget when he took the call...

*answers phone* hello, this is Richard
Hey, Richard. its Mike Love
WHO?
um, Mike Love? From Mike Love & The Diz?
oh...hey what's going on Mike

needless to say, the intimidation factor from '95 kicked right back in.

I explained what I needed to Richard. A mixtape intro that uses the Moo & oink jingle voiced by the announcer Tommy. instead of in-store specials it would talk about mixtape specials. Richard liked the idea and we agreed to meet on a saturday to cut the spot at his home studio. I arrived at his home in South Holland and he was a very warm host, Not the "crotchety" person I remember thinking he was back in the Dusty radio days. I remember having to explain to Tommy the whole concept of reading a script about mixtapes as if it was a Moo & Oink commercial but it was Richard who really helped him to understand the concept and coach him through the process. While spending part of that Saturday afternoon in his studio, I thought it was the coolest thing that Richard still used reel to reel to record the commercial to give it that warm, vintage, back-in-the-day feel. After the intro/commercial was cut, I talked to Richard about commercial production and all the different types of spots he's cut over the years and of course radio. He said he had a lot of respect for what The Bad Boyz had accomplished over the years and how proud he was of his own son Chris who was starting to come into his own as a radio personality in his own right on 'GCI. Totally the opposite of the "young bucks" I thought he perceived us as.

I asked him what I owed him for his time and he said nothing, it was on him but I insisted he take something for his time (back in'03 people actually used to turn down money) As I was leaving I said maybe one day I can come back and we can turn the Funtown Jingle into a mixtape intro. He flashed a smile and said he liked the idea. Something he created back in the day reaching a new generation in a new and creative way and If I wanted to do it to just give him a call.

The track that sets it all off.

The mixtape intro is easily the most important track of any mixtape or remix album I've ever done. Its the track that the avaerage cat skips and goes straight to the 1st song after hearing it once or twice, but I never skip intros. EVER! They set up an album or mixtape. Which leads me to tell you DJ's to step your intro game up (you can use these as a primer)

These are my all-time faves from all the projects I've done (in favorites order).

1. Cornerstone Mixtape #43 (2002)

Green Lantern's intro for Cornerstone Mixtape #8 is what inspired me to even do mixtapes and when I got an opportunity to do one I wanted to make it just as memorable. I got Juice (a Chicago rap and off-the-dome freestyle legend) to do the intro but at the last minute I decided to change the beat. Grand Theft Auto III was the hottest video game at the time and the opening credits music was my shit so I decided to use it for the intro. I do every mixtape intro for myself, so if you dont get it, you're like dude is rapping over a jazz loop. If you DO get it, you're like OH MY GOD...THIS DUDE FLIPPED THE THEME FROM GRAND THEFT AUTO 3!!!! What really touched my heart is there was a Cornerstone Mixtape that came out with a dvd about a year later and they were asking folks at this party which Cornerstone Mixtape DJ's they like the best and some cat said Mike Love. He obviously got it.

2. NBA Live Hosted by Antione Walker (2002)

Profound is one of very few MC's that I've ever approached in Chicago to do an intro and said I NEED...BLAH BLAH, SUCH AND SUCH and he delivered EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED THE WAY I PICTURED IT IN MY HEAD! I said, I'm doing a mixtape hosted by Antione Walker and I need an intro. Talk about 'Toine, the NBA live mixtape concept, MikeLove, and yourself (sounds easy enough but a lot of cats need waaaay more direction). The disco era Boston Celtics record kicks it off and the beat was inspired by the Trackmasters, who had flipped the Nike freestyle commercial into a really dope spot about the new AI joints with Jadakiss on the raps. I recreated the grindin' beat Trackmasters style with the ball bouncing, shoe squeaks, and the ball hitting the rim as kicks & snares. No 808 in the kick cuz theres no 808 in the ball bouncing :)

3. Psychodrama Universal Session (2006)

Short, sweet & to the point. This intro is one of my favorites because it sets the mood of the mixtape on some eerie, haunting shit. Buk & Psyde set it off with a not so serious intro that gets serious real quick. I jacked the music from The Ring II soundtrack because I wanted that motion picture shit feel . Vocal drops from Bobby Gore and Newsense and the vocal panning of Buk and the echoes make it hot (for me at least...as I've said before, I do these projects for myself 1st)

4. Nigerian Gangster (2008)

Ever had muhfuckas love something so much they make you love it? That's the Nigerian Gangster intro for me. Honestly, I think its dope. Musically, conceptually, everything. But Obamas (my new word instead of saying niggas) L-O-V-E-D-E-D that shit. Like, no for real, OBAMAS LOVEDED THEM SOME NIGERIAN GANGSTER INTRO! I remember always thinking, yeah it is really, really dope, but I didnt love it any more that the dozen or so others I'd done. If you listen to the other intros on this page, using soundbytes is nothing new to me. Placing all those drops in a row and making them all fit together like a puzzle was nothing new to me. You may hear it in the other intros or maybe you won't, but the Nigerian Gangster intro to me was something I'd done before countless times. (see free r. kelly intro)

But this time it was Fela so it was special to folks I guess...

However, after all those props I was getting on the project I started to say to myself, MY GOD THEY'RE RIGHT...I DO LOVE THIS INTRO!

5. Profound: The Mixtape (2005)

I just fuckin' like this one, and for a really long time it was my favorite of all the MikeLove intros but it was probaly heard the least because it was on an artist mixtape. Profound is an "underground" MC from Chicago that did a bunch of stuff for my old radio show on 'GCI. Since his mixtape was going to reach a gang of people who didnt know MikeLove was cold as hell, I wanted to show out. I used a gang of testimonials I recorded in the streets from people who'd heard of Pro and people who's never heard of him. Add some cuts & scratches and a dope beat and you have an all-time favorite that I rewind at least 10 times everytime I play it.

6. Free R. Kelly Vol. I (2002)

To this day, I've never seen the R Kelly sex tape but in 2002 after that shit leaked to the press everyone else and they mama sure did! Suprisingly there had never been an R. Kelly's Greatest Hits up to that point and no one had ever done a mixtape of Kells hottest joints. I figured this cd was the best way to kick off my first official mixtape & get the Mike Love Show series off the ground and running.

I was right.

I was watching the Top 100 songs of the 80's on VH-1 and got to thinking, even though there are a lot of 1-hit wonders on this countdown, these songs have managed to live on and become classics. Why are the songs classics when most of the groups have broken up years ago and some of the artists have even passed away? Simple. When music is timeless, people continue to pass it on and discover and rediscover it.

There have been 100's of blogs that have featured or written about my Nigerian Gangster project that dropped in February (google:Nigerian Gangster to see results) and its always amazing to see blogs still writing about the project months later.

The reason?

Timeless music will live on and always be discovered & rediscovered.

Originally realeased July 4th 2004, Universal Session is a Classic Chicago Mixtape & the 1st in the series. The initial idea was to do these mixtapes as the definitive Chicago artist spotlight ala Gangster Grillz, but as with anything in and of Chicago, outside forces will come in and fuck up even the greatest ideas and make you say, nevermind.

For the uninformed, this is basically a soundtrack to Chicago gang culture. Soundbytes from artists like Common, Lupe Fiasco (In '04 nigga, NO DJ was on Lupe before me) Psychodrama, Do Or Die, Bump J, Preast of Qualo and Malik Yusef pretty much give you an insight on what its like growing up in Chicago & joining a 'nation'. Its a really dope documentary style mixtape with a a lot of timeless music that still holds up 4+ years later

Nigerian Gangster is the project that helped to make the name Mike Love a global brand, but it made a lot of heads say,

Here's a couple of mixtapes I did in 2004 that really blew up the Mike Love Show mixtape series. It's also good history lesson on what I been on from then till now.

I pulled it out and was listening to this joint this week and I really understand why It got the spotlight on MTV's Mixtape Mondays. It's the best produced, sequenced, and has the best selection of the entire Mike Love Show series. A bunch of dope remixes, some exclusives (at least in '04 they were), and the hottest underground joints coming out of Chicago in 2004. No need to hype this one. If you want to hear what Chicago was on before the "hipster hop" explosion of '08...

The very next Mixtape I dropped was the Kanye joint. The mixtape dropped in '04 but the interview part was recorded in '03. At the time Kanye was still struggling for respect (and a release date for college dropout) at Roc-A-Fella records. Twista's Slow Jams hadnt dropped yet and he had to fight for everything. Listening to this mixtape, It's amazing to see how far he's come in 4 years.
I remember listening to this with 'Ye, Common, John Legend and the whole Hustle fam in his trailer at the All Falls Down video shoot. College Dropout was coming out that upcoming Tuesday but we popped in this cd cuz we'd never done a mixtape together & Kanye wanted to hear how it turned out. He just kept starting Nuthin's Gonna Stop Me over & over.

Nothing like going back to the good old days.

The year started out with me doing a collabo with my man G-Spot from Cleveland (by way of Chicago) called Midwest Invasion. Joints on there from Shawnna, Royce 5'9, Majic Massey and the usual gang of idjits (Qualo, Bump J, Kanye, Twista nem, etc)

This is a joint that didn't get a lot of circulation in the Chi from The Movement cuz we wanted more input on the cover, but it most definitely got a good look in Justo's (RIP) column in The Source...so basically we had to stfu!

Lord knows I was overdue for a new solo mixtape (I hadnt dropped a new joint since Universal Session in the summer of '04) and here it is...Beats & Bussdowns Vol.1! It's an interesting blend of southern shit, gangsta Chicago shit, and a coupla shits I just wanted to put on a mixtape like the Common & Kanye freestyle from January on WGCI and that crazy-assed version of Straight Outta Compton by Nina Gordon. Those tracks definitely don't fit the bass-heavy aesthetic of the cd but fuck it, sometimes you just wanna put shit on a mixtape JUST CUZ! The interesting thing about the CD is it's packaged with a porn dvd. Now, i've personally never been a porn fan, but since this mixtape series was the brainchild of my manager Shala (who also doubles as 1/4th of the band Qualo) I decided to go along with it

My favorite joint of '05 has to be Nike Battlegrounds. Alotta blood, sweat & tears went into making this joint cuz we had to get clearances for all the artists in like a 4 week span. Then after it was done I had to go back and exx out alla the curse words cuz it was a bit harsh for the suits @ Nike. Then on toppa that I watch MTV only to see Chicago lose the game to NYC! I want that 60 minutes of my life back!

Anyway, it some hot Chicago joints on this one though. Moorocco Stone, Psychodrama on there, Juice, TWO joints from Bump J, Qualo, and Preast G SNAPS with a solo joint called Say My Name Bitch. Plus u got joints from Que Billah (unsigned hype) and Lupe Fiasco (signed hype)
